The history of shipping in Cyprus traces back hundreds of years. The geographical location of Cyprus being one of its greatest advantages. Lying at the crossroads and heart of Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, it creates the perfect base for sailors.

Cyprus is a European member and thereby affords EU diplomatic protection to yachts and merchant ships registered under the Cyprus flag.

Cyprus is Party to most international maritime conventions regulating areas of maritime safety, prevention of marine pollution, maritime labour and health and safety under a fully elaborated internal legal and regulatory system for the effectiveness of the same conventions.  Cyprus also has elaborated advanced and comprehensive national legislation acting as an umbrella of protection from acts of piracy through a regulated system that provides for armed security personnel in high risk areas.

Cyprus signed Bilateral Agreements on merchant shipping signed with 25 States, through which Cyprus ships receive either national or most favored nation treatment in the ports of other States.

A long standing member of Emerald’s Legal Team is specialized in Maritime Law, having received her LLB Degree from the ”London School of Economics and Political Sciences” and further obtained her LLM Degree in Maritime Law from the “University of London”. She was subsequently admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association in 2005 and have been practicing as a licensed lawyer since while at the same time has been engaged in part time lecturing in Marine Insurance and Carriage of Goods by Sea at Frederick University in Cyprus until 2010. Since September 2012 I became part time lecturer of the Cyprus Institute of Management in the subjects of Marine Insurance and Shipping Law at Bachelor level and Marine Insurance and Maritime Law at MBA level.

Currently involved in research in the area of Bilateral Agreements on Cooperation in Merchant Shipping / Maritime Transport concluded by the EU Member States. This involves research and analysis of the Agreements entered into between Cyprus with other countries, which enhance the competitiveness of the Cyprus Flag. The research aims to explore the practical and judicial implemenation of such Agreements, and to explore the interrelation of such Agreements with the relevant European Union competency and in particular with similar Agreements of cooperation in the field of Maritime Transport either concluded or currently negotiated by the EU with a number of third countries (China, India, Japan).
